""The connectivity fostered by globalization coupled with the increased tension generated by the tragedies of September 11th and other terrorist atrocities have created an intellectual hunger on both sides of the divide between the West and the Islamic world. Americans, Europeans, and others in "the West" want adequate and reliable information about Islam and the Muslim world. But what they get is often misleading, distorted and sensationalized. To offset this, those of us who know something about these subjects have been working overtime to correct the inaccuracies and to stop the flow of misinformation. Many religious leaders and scholars in the Muslim world are on a similar quest. They want to know how people in non-Muslim countries learn about Islam, the Qur'an, and the fundamentals of Muslim faith and practice because they, too, are fully aware of the falsehoods and fabrications that often pass for the truth in many American and European media outlets, whether news media or social media. Even more urgently, they seek to present a counter-narrative to the perverse and corrupted versions of Islam preached by groups like the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Boko Haram. Hope this book will be helpful in their efforts. ""--

In The Second Canonization of the Qurʾān , Nasser studies the transmission and reception of the Qurʾānic text and its variant readings through the work of Ibn Mujāhid (d. 324/936), the founder of the system of the Seven Eponymous Readings of the Qurʾān. The overarching project aims to track and study the scrupulous revisions the Qurʾān underwent, in its recited, oral form, through the 1,400-year journey towards a final, static, and systematized text. For the very first time, the book offers a complete and detailed documentation of all the variant readings of the Qurʾān as recorded by Ibn Mujāhid. A comprehensive audio recording accompanies the book, with more than 5,000 audio files of Qurʾānic recitations of variant readings.

"Female figures play pivotal roles in narratives of Islamic sacred history, and the Qur'an celebrates the aptitudes and competencies of many such figures in the realms of spirituality and piety, in political maneuvering, and in family relations. Some women figures use their agency in morally corrupt ways; however, the Qur'an presents many more examples of pious women, including those who birth, protect, guide, and inspire prophets. This book outlines how female figures-old, young, barren, fertile, chaste, profligate, saintly, and reproachable-enter Islamic sacred history and advance the Qur'an's overarching didactic aims. The analysis considers all the major and minor female figures referenced in the Qur'an, including those who appear in narratives of sacred history, in parables, in verses that allude to events contemporaneous with the Qur'an, and in descriptions of the eternal abode. Hundreds of Qur'anic verses pertain to women and girl figures. Female personalities appear in the Qur'anic accounts of human origins, in stories of the founding and destruction of nations, and in narratives of conquest, filial devotion, romantic attraction, and more. This work gives attention to these wide-ranging depictions and to themes related to sexual relations, kinship relations, divine-human relationships, female embodiment, and women's social roles. Analysis focuses on lexical features of the Qur'an, intra-textual resonances, and thematic juxtapositions. The book explores Qur'anic dictates involving gender relations and highlights female spiritual competencies"--

"In The Inimitable Qurʼān: Some Problems in English Translations of the Qurʼān with Reference to Rhetorical Features, Khalid Yahya Blankinship examines certain Arabic rhetorical features of the Qurʼān as represented in seven English translations. The author addresses the intersection of two important topics in Qurʼānic studies: the critique of the available English translations and the role of rhetoric in the interpretation of the Qurʼān. He identifies a number of figures characteristic of Qurʼanic style which represent some of the chief stumbling blocks for readers who are used to English in attempting to understand, interpret, and appreciate the text. The book should be useful to all those interested in rhetorical and translation studies and theory as well as Islamic studies"--

Since the 1980s, Muslim women reformers have made great strides in critiquing and reinterpreting the Islamic tradition. Yet these achievements have not produced a significant shift in the lived experience of Islam, particularly with respect to equality and justice in Muslim families. A new approach is needed: one that examines the underlying instruments of tradition and explores avenues for effecting change. In Islamic Interpretive Tradition and Gender Justice leading intellectuals and emerging researchers grapple with the problem of entrenched positions within Islam that affect women, investigating the processes by which interpretations become authoritative, the theoretical foundations upon which they stand, and the ways they have been used to inscribe and enforce gender limitations. Together, they argue that the Islamic interpretive tradition displays all the trappings of canonical texts, canonical figures, and canon law – despite the fact that Islam does not ordain religious authorities who could sanction processes of canonization. Through this lens, the essays in this collection offer insights into key issues in Islamic feminist scholarship, ranging from interreligious love, child marriage, polygamy, and divorce to stoning, segregation, seclusion, and gender hierarchies. Rooting their analysis in the primary texts and historical literature of Islam, contributors to Islamic Interpretive Tradition and Gender Justice contest oppressive interpretative canons, subvert classical methodologies, and provide new directions in the ongoing project of revitalizing Islamic exegesis and its ethical and legal implications.
